If I'm building a SHTF AR (5.56), what upper would you recommend that wont break the bank? I definitely want it to be carbine length gas system.
I prefer the long stroke gas piston pws does for a shtf gun, and i know that their pro line uppers are affordable
Here, if you're okay with a mid-length gas system. Aero is absolutely the best bang (heh) for buck for uppers.
Your considerations for a SHTF gun might differ, but I built mine primarily considering weight (lower, better) first, then role versatility (e.g. use a 16" barrel which won't excel at any ballistic function but do fine for most purposes).
Why do you specifically want a carbine-length gas system?
The carbine is naturally a little over gassed so it should keep the bolt cycling in an adverse environment, or dirty ammo with an extended period of not being able to clean it. Also, I do like Aero stuff. I have a 10.5" .300blk upper from them.
