I currently own 3 magazines for my AR, and all of them are the dirt-cheap steel variety. I've been thinking about buying a few more. Aside from the obvious answer (Magpul PMAGs), are there any brands that you guys would recommend?

I have Magpul PMAGs, a handful of Lancers, and quite a few STANAG mags. All of them work just fine.
My advice is to buy them cheap and stack them deep.
magpul is really the only answer. reliable and cheap. Lanbos has them for $9 on the regular. website is trash but it's legit.
Seriously good tip on Lanbo's. They have the best prices on most gear and a very reasonable shipping policy.
But how will I uphold my reputation for needless contrarianism if I buy the same thing as everyone else?
All jokes aside, I have heard stories of people having issues with polymer feed lips. Is there any truth to that, or is it just hearsay?
I’ve ran probably 10k rounds though my m16 and never had a failure due to a pmag. Only magazines I’ve ever had issues with are the palmetto state metal ones
They are by far the best mag ever made. I just wouldn't keep them loaded for more than like a year to avoid any issue with creep.
I got some troy battlemags that I have yet to have problems with, a bunch of colt steel mags that have been great, a few usgi aluminum 20 rounders that have been flawless. I have a 2 gen pmag that doesn't really fit the magwell, BUT, BIG BUT, I don't have an AR.
Pmags fit great in ars. Pmags were DESIGNED for ARs. Pmags are NOT STANAG. I traded a 3rd gen pmag for the 2nd gen because the 2nd gen at least will latch in my rifle. 3rd Gen is probably awesome for ARs, but the overinsertion bump prevented full insertion in my ARX.
I have some Duramag steel mags that have been gtg. I don't have any Lancer mags but I've seen some trusted pro's approve of those. If you can get a good deal on some pmags, tho, it wouldn't be a bad idea to stock up - sometimes Palmetto state armory has some killer deals on pmags. Keep at least 10 mags loaded and ready to go.
