I laughed my ass off when I saw that one.
Riiiiight. I was active Army (19K) for a decade and spent another decade as a GS and then DoD contractor and the vast, vast majority of black Americans were not in a straight-up combat arms MOS.
Most of them were in support positions, i.e. cooks, mechanics, commo, truck drivers, etc.
You know, jobs that pre-9/11 pretty much guaranteed one to not get shot or blown up while still getting that G.I. bill and making your resume stand out against a sea of Dindus.
I'm not saying they didn't exist - hell, best platoon tank sergeant I ever had was black but he was highly intelligent and out of an entire 3rd ACR tank company we had more Hawaiians (5 of them) in our unit than we did black soldiers.
He was also old as fuck and counting the days to retirement. I never saw any "new" black tankers, only older ones with 10 or less years to go til' they hit the twenty-year mark and could drop their retirement paperwork.
There is nothing "light" on a tank, you will never be clean on a tank, and a tank will kill the crew just as easily as the enemy if that crew is stupid and doesn't mesh well.
Most tankers do their 4 and get the fuck out or switch to a different MOS that isn't complete and utter hell on their bodies.
Combat arms (infantry, tanks, engineers, & artillery) is just not a profession the vast majority of black Americans go into.
So yeah, they can scream and yell all day long about being "former military" but being able to fill an ANCD, drive a truck, or cook an omelette isn't going to save their asses in a real-world firefight when they're getting their fucked-up on their flanks after walking into an IED ambush with secondaries all over the place.
If there's ever a HLM or MLM (Maori lives matter) movement, I'll get a little worried. I don't know many Native Hawaiians/Maori that aren't either extremely built or ridiculously strong. Most are pretty decent guys, though, so I highly doubt it would ever come to that.
