The thought line is that in early OIF/OEF the hadjis couldn't fight in the open so they ended up forcing a lot of urban fighting. The M4 was great for that so we retooled and that basically became standard. As Iraq "ended" and Afjamistan kept rocking reports came back of engagements over 400 yards. So we need more legs on the rounds.
Looking forward, having more enemies with body armor (except the ChiComms because, quote, it zaps the fighting spirt away) we need to be able to bust shells. 5.56 ain't great for that. 7.62 is but, the weight/recoil is tough (they let girls in the infantry now?!?!) So, light weight, flat flying, armor popping 6.8 rocks are going to get thrown
