$200 was an amount specifically designed so that most people could not afford it when it was first imposed by the NFA in 1934. The irony is that the people who could afford the tax stamps were the same people the bill was supposedly written to restrict access to (gangsters).
Government in action y'all.
Damnit, I can't seem to find it, but there was a court case years ago that deemed it illegal for the government to hold constitutional rights hostage behind a tax. The initial court case was (I think a state level) gov trying to repress media by requiring them to pay a tax to access their freedom of speech. I need to find it and bookmark it.
Anyways, the same should apply for the 2nd amendment. Constitutional rights should not be accessible only by those who are rich enough to pay some arbitrary tax to appease the government.
Gun and ammo purchases should be tax deductible just like donations to churches, for exactly the same reason.
Imagine your dog getting shot because you bought a newspaper without a tax stamp. Or invoked your right to remain silent.
Alternatively, if a $200 tax on my SBR is okay then we should charge the same amount to vote.
I seem to remover some Americans who did not like tax stamps very much...
