I was lucky to have a papaw that was into gun collecting when it was cheap and bountiful. I was even luckier to be his sole grandchild.
Nice. My dad's got one that his mom bought for his dad way back in the day (with bayonet). Traced the serial number and found it was manufactured in April 1943. That rifle truly is "the greatest battle implement ever devised". I'm working on getting the whole family together; I recently bought a Springfield Armory M1A (new manufacture, I'm not made of that much money :/), and I'm looking at getting an M1903 sometime in the future.
The best (and only) modification I have made to that M1 is an adjustable gas plug, so I can run higher pressure commercial ammo (often cheaper and easier to get) without bending the op rod. Only downside to that is shooting prone in the dirt with that rifle is now very dusty.
I bought a 1903 Springfield Mark 1, that had at some point been re-fitted with the 'C' stock. I'd like to see if I could find a new production Pederson device and appropriate ammo for it.
