Y’all are gonna shit on me for asking this, but jokes on you ‘cause that’s my favorite… What is the argument AGAINST red flag laws? I’m hearing more and more people that I consider level-headed consider the idea. Are those people sliding in an authoritarian direction? <3 you, r-words
really? you don't see a problem with giving literally anyone, even someone who may not even know you, the opportunity to have your private property seized without any due process whatsoever?
"Hey Steezy, you hurt my feelings when you disagreed with my political opinion. I'm going to call 911 and report you as a danger to those around you so a SWAT team can kick in your door and take your shit and throw in you in jail"
Didn't one of the recent mass shooters threaten to shoot or blow up his school or some shit, and the FBI interviewed him and then a few years later here we are?
"shooter was previously known to law enforcement and/or FBI..."
One legal argument against them hinges on how you interpret the Fifth Amendment's "shall not be deprived of life, liberty, or property without due process of law" bit. Generally, "due process" refers to a trial, like one in which you get convicted of a felony and lose your right to bear arms. Red flag laws deprive somebody of that right without a trial (granted, on a temporary basis, but the point stands).
And they can take your property, and you have to fight the legal system at your expense to get it back.
I mean, we can barely trust people with knowing the number to 911. Someone doesnt like you and noom you're getting "swatted". Thats vlose enough that i dont need them to be able to have my possessions seized.
Because fuck you that's why.
