Well in terms of the law the semi-auto centrefire rifles are "gone", in reality there are still probably 200k+ in now illegal circulation. Though no one is using them in public other than our outlaw mc and ethnic gangs.
We can still have them with the correct licencing as collectors but it is quite difficult to get, I haven't bothered. This basically means my collection of functioning automatic lmg's and select-fire rifles are less restricted than a remington 7400 hunting rifle. For a pest control licence it is even more difficult so now various areas are being overrun with rabbits, goats and wallabies because no one can be fucked shooting them now that the most effective tools for the job are unobtainable.
We can still have semi-auto rimfire and shotgun as federated farmers & fish and game (farmer & game bird hunter lobbyists) pushed for it but we are limited on mag size to 10 for rimfire & centrefire bolt/lever and 5 for all shotguns though this is "commensurate to chamber size", one could theoretically use more than 5 smaller shells in a 3.5" chambered shotgun but this hasn't been challenged in court as for obvious reasons no one wants to be a martyr. They have also recently banned pump action centrefire rifles to match the ban on shotguns with detachable mags as well as restricting ownership of pistol carbine kits.
It's pretty bad, the NZ media were complicit in perpetuating our governments lie that it was only "assault rifles and military style semi automatics" affected, they failed to mention that all semi-automatic centrefire rifles were reclassified as "military style semi automatics", ironically the actual "assault rifles" were not touched in any of the law changes, probably because a few of our politicians own substantial personal collections themselves.
They punished almost 300k Kiwi's due to the actions of an Australian who somehow received a firearms licence within 6 weeks of being in the country, that is a fact that Police, Govt and Media continue to sweep under the rug and refuse to answer any questions on.
Really big oof
Sounds bad. The feds fucked up and everyone gets punished. Know that from here
So most gun owners had a boating accident? Or does no one actually care about the left over rifles? Where they all registered?
Yep it sucks, we now have a separate licence for semi-auto rifles and a separate for "hi-cap" mags, some people have even been approved for the rifle and denied for the mags, go figure.
Plenty had boating accidents, many more just sold them to the gangs who made it very publicly known that they were buying pretty much everything at a much higher rate than what the govt were willing to pay. I know of someone that parted with a sizeable cache to the Hells Angels who paid 10x what the govt were going to pay. With the price of methamphetamine here and the amount they sell, they probably had a larger buyback budget than the govt. In terms of registration, only 14k firearms that had to be handed in were registered, these were guns that fit the definition of an "assault weapon" or as we called them here Military Style Semi-autos. Most of these got handed in but they are still tracking down a few.
The police, govt and media are burying their heads in the sand, they state that it was a great success but everyone knows it was a massive failure. They had 56k firearms handed in in total, one of our largest firearms sellers have stated they imported over 60k chinese SKS rifles in the 80's alone. It was only up to about 10 years ago they were still selling them by the crate.
