Check local/county ordinances. Make sure there's nothing behind it for a long ways. Build it twice as high as you think it should be- nothing gets people pissed off more than wounded cattle or having rounds zip past their head while on a tractor. If you can, build an L shape so you can do more dynamic shooting/moving drills. Getting approval from the Sheriff is possible just in case pissy neighbors complain. Preferably you're already friends with your neighbors, which precludes any possible steppage...
This is a lot of what i see. I'm escaping the city to the sticks. Surrounded by farms where a lot of people already shoot. I think I'm good there, but will definitely make friendly with the neighbor and keep the shooting to reasonable hours.
There is no structures for almost a mile in the direction i selected, it was selected for just that reason. But there are pastures.
Well I was going to do 8 ft berm with 2 more feet of wooden "fencing" at the top. I think 20ft might be a bit much.
I don't know if the sheriff idea is a good one or not. I sounds reasonable, but at the same time if you ask they could try to say "no".
Aside from reasonable hours be mindful of calendar dates for hunting various game in your region. Neighbors will get pissy if you’re plinking all day while they’re in a stand.
That's a good point too. Thanks.
Build it really well, check out if you need any permits/permissions or if there are any ordinances stopping you, and then never ask permission again and just do it.
There was a guy in the town i grew up in that built his own range by basically buying 30 acres of a v shaped small valley and people were so prissy they tried to pass an ordinance banning shooting on private property of less than 100 contiguous acres because their weak commie ears couldn’t handle the sound of freedom. The lesson being make sure you’re far away from people
Good points.
I suppose the Sheriff advice is more applicable if you're friends with a few deputies and/or the sheriff himself- small communities are great. 8ft is much better than the 3ft brush piles I've seen people shoot into...
