.357 magnum used to have the same case length as .38 special.
That Elmer Keith guy kept putting more powder in the case when he was developing loads until the cylinder asploded. Then he got to thinking, hrm maybe I need to tell s&w to beef up their cylinder and make the cases an 1/8" longer so you can't put my pissing hawt reloads in a .38.
Don't kill yourself reading this a certain way, but .38 S&W is kinda a cowboy round and the only people really shooting that are cowboy action shooters and the whole game is to shoot quick so the loads are much lighter than they were originally.
