McManigal later admitted to police that he shot towards officers until his gun jammed, at which point he surrendered and came outside, according to the jail report. He told investigators he was shooting at police so they would not kill him, and he shot out the street light in an effort to send a message to police to leave him alone, the report states.

...and it worked. ?
2A Justification Intensifies
Big brain think
Serious question -- would this dude likely be dead if he hadn't returned fire?
No. The police suspected he was going to barricade himself, so they drove up using an MRAP, and he shot at them through the door. What would have gotten him killed is if those cops weren't in the MRAP. They would have had to return fire to end the incoming fire. Because they were sitting in an armored vehicle, there was 1: no real threat to them, and 2: they had no way of returning fire without exposing themselves. Realistically, they could have sat in the MRAP and let him shoot at it until he ran out of ammo.
Or until brass got stuck in his action and he couldn't figure out how to clear it.
It makes sense that people who don't shoot think gun jams are catastrophic events that take guns out of commission forever, because they don't shoot, have limp wrists, and no nothing about basic malfunction drills
Well, you know what they say, 2 is 1 and 1 is none.
NY reload for the win.
Rule #12: Never attribute to incompetence that which can be explained by fear of commitment.
He bitched out and the jam was an excuse.
